Solar cooking in the winter!

I've had some people tell me solar ovens just won't work in the winter.  So I tested it.  The answer is, they do!  I put both of mine out for 20 min & then checked the temp.  The SOS was 260 degrees, & the Global was 275.  Not bad considering it was under 30 degrees outside.
Now there are some things to consider or plan for winter cooking.  Obviously you're going to get less sunny days, or sometimes only a few hours of sun.  I've been watching my backyard, & because of the angle of the sun, & my neighbors houses & trees, I only get about 4 hours of sun back there in the winter, that touches the ground.  I could get more if I start the ovens in the front yard in the morning.  So I probably can't put a frozen roast out there to cook all day like I can other times of the year.  But there are plenty of other things I can do.

I put small biscuits in the SOS.  One thing about it, if you use the "winter angle", it's space to put things is smaller, so you have to have smaller pots or trays.  The biscuits were cooked all the way through in 20 min.  A whole loaf of bread would take longer, but if you get 1 1/2 hours of sun you could probably have the bread all cooked, including pre-heating the oven.  It would take less time to "can" the bread in jars (see previous posts on this).  I would recommend doing this if you were relying on your solar oven, so that you would still have something to open on cloudy days.  But this is all easily doable & plannable!

Since I didn't have all day to cook beef stew (and I was in a beef stew mood), I put in a jar I'd already canned myself.  I put it in the Global in the black pot that comes with it.  This was only a pint jar (I was by myself that day), so there wasn't a lot of it.  It was heated through in 25 min.  Yummy!!  So I'm going to keep in mind that if I have very short periods of sun, anything I bought or canned myself can be heated in my solar oven.

I also think that things like rice, pastas, etc could be quickly cooked in short sun periods in my solar ovens.  That gives me enough options to keep us fed with some hot meals with a bit of sun.  If I filled the oven with jars of bread, I could probably with a couple hours of sun get enough bread for my son & I for a week or two.  And maybe with a longer sunny day, can some cookies as well!  mmmmm
All without having to store any fuel!  I LOVE my solar ovens!

Email me at singlemomprep@gmail.com if you're interested in buying a solar oven!  It's my favorite prep item!

oven gloves for solar oven

While testing "canning" bread from the solar oven, I discovered it was tricky to do with regular hot pan holders.  Trying to get the reusable canning lid on, & then the ring, & holding the jars.  Tricky!  So I decided to try some of these.  They're awesome!  A bit big on my little hands, but still way better.  I can manipulate things with the solar oven so much better.  And I've never had my hands start to feel too hot.  I'm really glad I got these.

Cookie baking in 2 solar ovens

Global Sun oven
SOS oven

Cookies from both ovens
Today I tried chocolate chip cookies in both solar ovens to compare them.
The first thing I noticed is the Global heated up much faster.  It was almost to 100 by the time I'd adjusted the back leg.  The SOS hadn't even shown a temperature rise.  But by the time I had the dough made, the SOS was just over 300, & the Global was near 350.  This recipe I bake in my home oven at 375, so I was interested to see how they did at lower temps.
I baked the cookies in the Global for about 15 min (in my oven inside I cook these 9 min).  They weren't brown on the top, but they were cooked all the way through & tasted delicious.  I baked them in the SOS for about 20 min.  I think they could have used 3-5 more min.  But they were delicious too.  As far as taste, I could not tell a difference between the two.  I think the ones in the Global were a bit less flat.  Both ended up somewhat crispy on the outside after they cooled, just like my oven baked ones, even though they didn't show any brown.  And taste wise, they were just as good as the ones baked inside.  So most of the difference is the speed of baking.   So I would still say, if you're only getting 1 oven, get the SOS.  It's cheaper & fits much more inside.  See my post "solar ovens rock" for info on where to get one.
I also tried some in a glass jar.  The idea being you can put the lid on, & it will seal & keep for several months.  This gives you baked goods to eat on cloudy days.  I will open it in a few weeks & post on how that turned out.
Now I'm going to go eat some cookies!

Our new solar oven!

Our Global Solar oven came today. Having this one is a pure luxury. The SOS Sport is cheaper & fits more & will do most everything. But I wanted one that would get to higher temperatures to make baking better. I'm anticipating a day when I will be doing most of my cooking in these, so I want to have everything I want. Of course having anything will be more than most people around!
I really like the leg in the back. It makes it super easy to tilt to get the best sun. It heats up fast! In the time it took me to take 3 photos of my son by it, it had gotten to almost 100 degrees. If you stand where the mirrors are reflecting at you, you can really feel the heat! This is well made, durable, & has a handy carrying handle. Heavier than the SOS, but probably a bit hardier. My 8 year old could carry it so it's not too heavy.
We've got bread raising right now to try in it!

BTW I sell these for anyone interested. The cost is $275 shipped to your home. Includes the WAPI (water pasturization indicator), thermometer, and 1 pot. Utah residents must pay sales tax.
email me if you'd like flyers comparing the 2 emailed to you. yulebean@gmail.com

The SOS is $190 shipped, with 2 pots, reflectors, thermometer & WAPI. Can use with or without reflectors.

dehydrating strawberries in solar oven

I have a lot of strawberries in my patch & I love drying them. My son eats them like candy & they're completely healthy! I hate the sound of my dehydrator going all day though, & wonder what to do if there were no electricity. So I tried some in my solar oven.
One concern was you need heat to circulate around. And darker things work better in a solar oven. I found some black metal letter holders at Dollar Tree. They are black mesh, just the thing! I used them right side up, but I think they'd be even better upside down, so there's more air underneath. I propped them up on another pan so they were nearer the lid of the oven. I propped the lid open so that the moisture could escape (this is the one solar cooking you don't want the moisture to stay in). I just used a glue bottle to prop it open. The other concern I had was the strawberries sticking. On my dehydrator I use those mesh plastic sheets, so they pop off easy. I found some white plastic sheeting (also at Dollar Tree), but it was white, so I didn't know how it would work. I decided to try both ways.
After about 4 hours, the ones on just the black were done. And they didn't stick! The ones on the white worked as well, but they took a bit longer. In the future I'll probably just use the black mesh.
I'm way excited I found a rack for only $1. Since the strawberries grow in my yard, & I didn't even use electricity, this is a totally free food storage item!
Another thing I recently discovered was a strawberry slicer. I was dubious...most kitchen gadgets don't really work. But this thing is awesome! It is going to save me hours on my drying strawberry time! Rather than slicing each berry by hand I can put 2-5 (if they're smaller ones) in at a time & have them perfectly slice for drying. Some of the best money I've ever spent!

Solar Ovens Rock!

I recently discovered solar ovens. I love the concept that I can cook year round if there's no electricity. I've started cooking with mine every day...anything I can cook in it I'm giving it a try. It's hot summer right now & I really like that I don't have to heat up my kitchen to cook. And it's free, saves me electric bill...a real plus for a single mom! But I'm even more excited to know that if there's ever no power, I can still cook! I also like that they're actually something I can afford! I'd looked at home solar power & it was about $12,000! I feel great that for less than $200 I can completely cross something off my preparedness list! Email me at yulebean@gmail.com if you'd like one, or more info!
In a solar oven you can:

  • Bake bread, muffins, cookies, cakes & biscuits!
  • Roasts, steak, chicken, fish, hamburger and pork!
  • Sun-baked pizza!
  • Beans, rice, potatoes, legumes, whole grains and pasta!
  • Vegetables, stews & soups!
Pasteurizes your water!
And deyhdrate fruit!
I don't know where you are, but in Utah we get 260 sunny days a year. These work in any temperature, as long as there's sun. Food never burns, I don't have to store tons of propane or charcoal, and the food is moist and flavorful! Some of my recipes taste better in this than they ever have in a crock pot!
I'm not big on selling things, but I have decided to sell these. Mostly because I think they're so cool & I want all my family & friends to have one! But also because as a single mom, any extra income helps, especially with mounting lawyers fees caused by a cranky ex!
There are 2 kinds. The SOS Sport and the Global. If you were only getting 1, I'd say to get the SOS, although I hope to eventually have both. Here's the comparisons:

  • Global Sun Oven
    • Reaches temp. up to 400 degrees
    • Holds one pot of food or two loaves bread
    • Perfect “baking” oven!
    • Glass lid, self-leveling platter inside, and tilt-leg to aim oven at sun
    • Folds up w/ handle. Only 21 lbs.
    • ADVANTAGES OVER SOS: Bakes at higher temperatures. Great for one or two person family or as a “baking” oven

SOS Sport Oven
  • Reaches temp. up to 350 degrees
  • Holds two pots of food
  • Engineered 3M plastic lid has 1” air-gap for better heat retention
  • R 6.5 Insulation in housing
  • Weighs only 10 lbs.
  • Even works great without reflectors!
  • Broad base gives better stability
ADVANTAGES OVER GLOBAL: Cooks twice the amount of food and is less expensive. Great for larger families.

The prices are: SOS with reflectors, 2 black pots, water pasturization indicator, reflectors, thermometer, recipe book, instruction manual & shipping to your door is $190.

Global with reflector, 1 black pot, thermometer, water pasturization indicator and shipping is $275.

These are starting to backorder because they're getting so popular! If you'd like one email me for ordering instructions. I'll be posting & reviewing recipes as I make them.
